What does it mean to say, ‘I love you’?
Is it the calming hand on a shoulder, or taking them into your arms? Or you into theirs?
Is it that glance across the room at them at a party? That familiar glint in their eye, of admiration, lust, friendship and a connection much deeper than you have with anyone else?
Is it the ‘text me when you get home’s, the ‘make sure she gets home safe’s, the ‘I’ll carry your bag for you’s?
Is it walking on the street side of the sidewalk. Is it helping them into their coat, and you into yours?
Is it those little reassuring touches when you are together in silence, doing your own thing yet spending time together?
Is it when they sleepily pull you closer under the covers?
What does it mean to say I love you?
As a wise woman once said: Let me count the ways.
That was a wise woman, Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
