So late last December, I was thrilled to receive three products from The Butters Hygeinics Company, a Black and LGBTQ+ owned company based in America. After contacting them, they kindly agreed to send me up to five products of my choice for me to review.
I want to preface this review by extending a massive thank you to the owners for agreeing to have me test these products.
I also have an promo code! Use code VIOLET5 if you choose to purchase a product, where I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you
On with the review!
I chose the Satsuma & Guava shampoo bar, the PMS Rescue cream, and the infamous Butters Co. lube. I’ll just say here right off the bat: SUPPORT. THIS. COMPANY. THEY ARE SO BLOODY GOOD! I know fellow bloggers have raved about their products but holy forking shirt! If I had unlimited funds, I’d buy out their entire store.
One thing I love is how much thought the owners (who are absolutely lovely!) have put into their products. First off, they’re handmade, so that’s amazing. Second, they’re 100% vegan and never tested on animals, which is a big positive. Also, as mentioned before, Butters is a small business that is Black and queer owned, so not only is there extra thought about what products there are and what they contain, but also being much more inclusive than the average business. It’s inclusive of all skin colours, sexual orientations and gender identities.
So, what are my thoughts on the products I tried?
SATSUMA & GUAVA SILKENING BOTANICALS SHAMPOO BAR
I’ve been using shampoo bars full-time for almost a year now (minus now as I’ve some shampoo in a plastic bottle left to use up). I made the switch to cut down on single use plastic and be more sustainable, so seeing the company did bars, I was curious. This is one of many of their shampoo bars available (unscented ones are also available) and sells for $2.75 USD. It’s part of their Silk Botanicals collection, containing bamboo extract and silk protein.
First of all: it smells incredible. I’ve always loved the smell of citrus and deep, refreshing scents, so this bar’s scent went down like a treat. Now if it would work on my hair was another matter. Shampoo bars aren’t for everyone, and even if they are, finding what works for you is a case of trial and error. Coming in foil packaging, I was pleased it wasn’t in plastic, however if Butters are looking for an even more sustainable form of packaging, I’d recommend something like cardboard to fit the bar. Needing a shower when these arrived, I stripped off, shampoo bar in hand and set to work.
Two months in, and I really like this bar. Granted, if you use too much, it’ll leave your hair greasy like other shampoos if you do the same, but it lathers up lovely, cleans my hair really well and leaves it feeling silky and soft, more so than other shampoo bars I’ve used. I usually wash my hair every other day, so this is a good bar for that, and in keeping with most shampoo bars, much longer lasting than typical liquid shampoo. Being at an affordable price as well, it’s a shampoo I’d definitely use again.
I’m using this right now as it’s my time of the month and OH. MY. GOD this is good.
This for me, is pretty much a holy grail period product for me now and I don’t say that lightly. A product to help period cramps that’s GOOD? Where do I sign up?!
If you’ve read my posts about periods before, you’ll know I have heavy periods that can really tire me out, not to mention the painful cramps and my voracious appetite when Mother Nature pays her monthly visit. I’d heard very good things about this, so this was the first thing on my list to try from The Butters Hygienics Co. It’s currently available on their site from $5.25 USD.
It contains “a luscious blend of all-organic shea butter, coconut oil + aloe + grapeseed/olive/soy/palm/evening primrose/neem/lemongrass/peppermint, epsom salt, vitamin c & e“ with instructions to “apply over belly, legs, lower back etc. Simply let it soak in and try to relax. More effective when used with a heating pad or hot water bag. You should notice a lower amount of tension, stimulated digestion and a relaxation of your muscles.”
A lot of claims to live up to, right? Well, they do. The texture of this cream is a mixture of buttery and oily, has that distinct epsom salt smell with lemongrass undertones, but not overpowering. It glides on to the skin well, but like any oil or butter based product, don’t forget to wash your hands afterwards. It takes a little while for the buterriness to sink into the skin, but within not even a minute of applying, the effects are there.
For a few hours, my cramps and back pain are significantly reduced, literally like I barely have any pain, until reapplying after approx. 3 hours.
There’s no if about it. I will be buying this product again. For my heavy days, its an absolute godsend and cannot recommend it enough. Just rub it in, feel the pain reduce and tuck up in bed
Is it possible to rave too much about a product? I don’t think so. Again, I heard incredibly good things about this lube, so wanted to try it. It’s available from $2 USD at it’s smallest jar, going up to over $40 USD depending on the size.
The product label says it’s compatible with silicone, metal, glass, PVC, sil-a-gel, lambskin, polyurethane and nitrile. Similar to the PMS rescue, it contains an “long-lasting blend of organic shea + aloe + grapeseed, olive, soy & sustainable palm oils with a little acv & vitamins c & e.”
The texture and consistency was a little thinner but very similar to my oil-based lube from The Yes Yes Company, feeling very moisturising on the skin. But a little quirk with this lube is that not only can it be used with certain sex toys, certain condoms are recommended for use with it as well.
It suggests to ONLY use the following types of condoms with this lube, with brand suggestions: Nitrile (FC2), lamb skin (Trojan Naturalamb) and polyurethane (Trojan Bareskin Non-Latex Supra). For all other condoms, please use your regularly water based, condom safe lube. Safety first.
While I overall consider this a drawback, I also think it’s a product thats worth the investment in these condoms, it’s that good. With condoms being my go-to form of birth control, I really appreciated this information.
Suffice to say, I really like this lube. It’s fantastic quality and one of the best of its kind on the market, in my opinion. Aside from long lasting and more moisturising than regular, run of the mill lubes, it’s actually a really diverse product.
I found it can be really moisturing on my legs, which are prone to dry skin. It might take a little while to sink in (a little bit goes a long way) but it does a really good job. We stan multi-purpose use in this house!
These products are seriously good and I recommend them highly. By supporting this company, you’d be supporting a small business amazing, affordable products, Black and queer owned (which often, BIPOC companies face the brunt of business hardships, i.e. a pandemic) and from this sex blogger? Very much approved of!
I’d like to thank the owners of The Butters Hygienics Co. for agreeing to have me test these wonderful products, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing what other great products they have to offer. Onwards, payday!
